Introduction
Partial discharge (PD) is a localized dielectric breakdown of a small portion of a solid or liquid electrical insulation system under high & medium voltage stress. Partial discharges within an insulation system may or may not exhibit visible discharges. In high & medium voltage devices such as power transformer, power cable, switchgear, motor and generator, bus duct, transformer winding distortion, bushing, power factor – capacitor, reactor and instrument transformer this buildup of charge and its release can be symptomatic of problems associated with aging, such as floating components and insulation breakdown.

Partial Discharge detection is used in power systems to monitor the state of health of high & medium voltage equipments (such as power transformer, power cable, switchgear, motor and generator, bus duct, transformer winding distortion, bushing, power factor – capacitor, reactor, instrument transformer) if such problems are not detected and repaired, the strength and frequency of PDs increases and eventually leads to the catastrophic failure, which can cause external equipment damage, fires and loss of revenue due to an unscheduled outage.

Power Quality Engineering Sdn Bhd provides on-site, non intrusive online Partial Discharge (PD) test services to medium and high voltage equipments for electricity utility and industrial clients. PD Test Services are carried out by our qualified engineer team who utilize high PD detection technology and instrument like OSM-Longshot Diagnostic PD Test Technology, Partial Discharge Monitor; AR700 and a wide range of On-line PD Sensors to provide the highest level of Partial Discharge assessment available in the marketplace.

The Benefits of On-Line Partial Discharge Testing are:

  • It is truly a predictive test, indicating insulation degradation in advance of the failure
    (the detection of 'incipient' faults).
  • It is a non-intrusive test, requiring no interruption of service and is performed under normal operating voltage and load.
  • It is a nondestructive test i.e. it does not test to failure or adversely affect the equipment under test.
  • It does not use any overvoltages, thereby not exposing the tested equipment to higher voltage stresses than those encountered under normal operating conditions.
  • Trending can be accomplished by storing results to allow comparison with future tests.
  • In many instances the site of the partial discharge occurrence can be located within the test object, so the localized problem can be repaired.
  • The cost to perform an On-line PD survey is relatively inexpensive compared with off-line testing, allowing annual surveys to be performed economically at most facilities.
